Infrastructure - Panama - ACP receives bids for third dry excavation project

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has received a total of six bids for the third of four dry excavation contracts under its US$5.25bn expansion program, the entity said in a release.

Works include the excavation, removal and disposal of 8Mm3 of material, as well as the construction of approximately 2.5km of access roads and the clearing of 190ha of land mined with explosives from former US military training in Panama.

"With the prices offered today by the bidders for this contract, the Canal's expansion program remains on track and on budget," ACP engineering and program management VP Jorge Quijano was quoted as saying.

Cilsa Minera María presented the highest bid with US$74.6mn, while the lowest offer was submitted by Constructora Meco, US$$36.6mn.

The rest of the bidders are Conalvias-Retraneq (US$61.3mn), Constructora Santa Fe (US$46mn), Corporación M&S (US$45.2mn) and Constructora Urbana (US$38.2mn).

ACP expects to review the submissions and determine the winner of the contract before January 2009.

The entity's expansion project aims to build a new lane of traffic along the Panama Canal through the construction of a new set of locks, which will double capacity and allow more traffic and longer, wider ships.
