Brazil's national development bank BNDES has approved 121mn reais (US$51mn) in financing for construction of two small-scale hydro (PCH) plants totaling 39MW installed capacity.

The money also will go to build associated transmission lines. Power firm Rio PCH 1, a subsidiary of power holding company Neoenergia, will receive the funding, the bank said in a statement.

The 19MW Pedra do Garrafão plant will receive 58.7mn reais from BNDES, while 20MW Pirapetinga PCH will get 56.9mn reais.

Two sub-credits totaling 5.6mn reais for environmental programs and procurement are included in the financing, a BNDES spokesperson told BNamericas.

Both projects are along the border of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo states.

BNDES approved 69 power generation projects with 1.38GW of installed capacity from 2003 through August 2008.
