Water & Waste - Peru - Government to invest US$462mn in five water, sewage treatment plants

Peruvian authorities expect US$462mn to be invested in five potable water and wastewater treatment plants outside the Lima region by 2011, an official from the country's housing, construction and sanitation ministry told BNamericas.

The official was commenting on minister Enrique Cornejo's presentation at a water and sanitation conference, held at the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean's headquarters in Chile on September 23.

The amount includes the construction of a wastewater treatment plant in Iquitos, in region Loreto, for US$110mn. The project is likely to receive US$60mn in financial support from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), the official said.

The initiative also involves the rehabilitation, improvement and expansion of the city's sewerage system.

The second initiative involves improving the potable water and sewerage system in northern region Cajamarca, including the construction of a potable water plant, which will require an estimated US$98mn investment.

This project will also be supported by JBIC, which will provide US$45mn, according to a report issued by the Japanese embassy in Peru.

In addition, JBIC will provide US$50mn in financial support for the improvement of Lima's Callao district's potable water and sewerage services. This initiative, however, is not included in the US$462mn investment plan.

The third project consists of the construction of a wastewater treatment plant in region Cuzco, which will require an estimated US$20mn investment. This initiative is considered a priority, as the facility will reduce the pollution caused by untreated sewage being dumped into the Huatanay river.

Cuzco is a highly visited tourist area, and regional and national authorities are making great efforts to improve the region's environmental standards to ensure the sustainability of its national resources, the official added.

The last initiative consists of the construction of two treatment plants in southern region Arequipa, requiring a US$234mn investment.

A total of US$107mn will be destined to the construction of a wastewater treatment plant, while US$118mn will be invested in the construction of the potable water treatment plant known as La Tomilla II.

All these projects are part of a program to improve sanitation in Peruvian regions outside of capital Lima, where water and sanitation levels are much higher than in the rest of the country.

They are also included in the country's efforts to improve general potable water and sanitation standards to meet the UN Millennium Goals, which seek to reduce poverty by 50%.

Authorities are promoting public-private partnerships in water and sanitation, as well as concessions to boost the sector's development.
