Electric Power - Brazil - EPE: Financial crisis won't delay wind auction

Brazil's government does not expect the financial crisis to delay next year's auction for wind projects, according to Mauricio Tolmasquim, president of federal energy planning company EPE.

"The mines and energy ministry [MME] has commissioned EPE to perform the feasibility studies and the idea is to host the auction next year," he said in Rio de Janeiro at the 12th Brazilian Energy Congress.

"I don't believe the auction will be delayed. The number of companies interested in wind power in Brazil is monumental," he said. "With or without the financial crisis, there will be investors willing to inject money into the sector."

WIND, SOLAR DEVELOPMENT

The government is studying new ways to boost wind and solar development in the country, environment minister Carlos Minc said at the event in Rio.

Critics have said not enough has been done to promote wind power in Brazil as the Proinfa renewable program's goal for wind development was not achieved.

"We are losing our momentum here," Minc said.

One strategy would be to reduce the amount of Brazilian-made inputs that must go into projects, he said. Some have blamed the slow rate of wind development on a shortage of turbine producers in Brazil.

Another strategy would be to grant tax incentives to energy producers.

"The stimulus package would have a time limit to allow the national industry to develop itself," according to the minister.
