Electric Power - Guatemala - Xalalб hydro project comes up dry, tender declared void

No offers were submitted to Guatemala's state power company Inde to develop the 181MW Xalalá hydro project, an Inde hydroelectric projects promotion official told BNamericas.

Nine firms purchased bidding rules earlier this year for the project.

The bidding process has been declared void, the official said. Information was not immediately available as to whether a new call for bids would be made or reasons why companies did not submit offers.

The winner would have 24 months to carry out technical, social, environmental, economic, financial and legal studies to determine feasibility.

The same company would build Xalalá if the project proves feasible and operate and maintain the plant for an initial 30 years.

Xalalá would be built on the Chixoy river in Baja Verapaz department and generate 886GWh a year, boasting an 82m-high dam wall and a reservoir covering 7.5km2.
