Brazil's 1.35GW Angra III nuclear project will receive its installation license on December 30, according to documents on the fifth update of the federal government's growth acceleration program (PAC).
Environmental regulator Ibama has authorized federal nuclear power company Eletronuclear to install the reactor's building site, which marks the start of construction works and is a temporary structure that houses supplies and equipment needed for construction.
The company must present by November 15 its proposal to dispose of Angra III's nuclear waste.
Eletronuclear is considering building storage compartments for long-term treatment so the nuclear waste can be stored for 500 years.
JIRAU
Also according to the PAC update, Ibama will decide on October 31 on the Enersus consortium's proposal to build the 3.3GW Jirau hydro plant 9km away from the area set out in bidding rules.
The decision to change the plant's location has forced Ibama to review the original project.
The government expects Jirau to secure definitive license by April 2009.
Enersus is made up of multinational energy group GDF Suez with a 50.1% stake, engineering firm Camargo Corrêa with 9.9% and federal power holding company Eletrobrás subsidiaries Eletrosul and Chesf with 20% each.
OTHER PROJECTS
There are 61 hydro and thermo projects under construction in Brazil with a total installed capacity of 11.8GW, according to the document.
The biggest projects are the 3.15GW Santo Antônio (with 0.5% of work completed) and the 1.1GW UHE Estreito (24% completed).
Santo Antônio construction is expected to advance by 5% by the end of the year.
