Petrochemicals - Brazil - Unipar posts US$61mn Q3 net loss

Brazilian petrochemicals group Unipar reported a net loss of 140mn reais (US$61mn) in the third quarter compared to 46.6mn reais net profit in 3Q07, the group said in a statement.

Unipar's net revenues reached 1.57bn reais in the third quarter 2008, up 123% year-on-year.

Ebitda grew 83% to 200mn reais in the period.

In the first nine months of 2008, the group made a net loss of 102mn reais compared to a net profit of 129mn reais a year earlier.

"The main factor that influenced third quarter results was the exchange rate," Unipar's investors relations director José Octávio Vianello said in a webcast, referring to the depreciation of the local currency, the real, against the US dollar during the period.

According to Vianello, exchange rate fluctuations also impacted results for the first nine months, but petrochemical raw material price increases, which were a direct result of escalating oil prices, also had a negative effect on the group's January-September figures.

Unipar said Q3 was the first quarter to fully reflect the group's holding in Brazilian petrochemical company Quattor.

Unipar has a 60% stake in the joint venture with federal energy company Petrobras (NYSE: PBR) holding the remaining 40%.
