Telecom Argentina (NYSE: TEO) recorded a net profit of 218mn pesos (US$66mn) in the third quarter of the year, down 4% compared to 227mn pesos in the same period of 2007.
The company's revenues for the period amounted to 2.74bn pesos, an 18% increase on the 2.31bn pesos seen in 3Q07, TEO said in its latest earnings release.
For the first nine months, TEO's net profit reached 831mn pesos, up 35% compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, revenues in the first three quarters climbed 20% to 7.79bn pesos from 6.52bn pesos the year before.
During the third quarter, the fixed telephony business generated revenues of 612mn pesos, up 4% compared to 586mn pesos in 3Q07.
"The company continues to deliver growth both in operational and financial terms," company COO Franco Bertone said during a conference call.
At the end of September, TEO had 4.29mn fixed lines in service, up 3% compared to end-September last year.
Revenues from the broadband and data segment came to 230mn pesos in 3Q08, up 35% year-on-year.
TEO ended the quarter with 976,000 ADSL subscribers, an increase of 44% compared to end-3Q07.
Bertone said that the company continues to develop its broadband portfolio with increasing demand and penetration.
The executive also said that Telecom expanded Arpu during the quarter mainly due to a value added offering and pricing plans. TEO's Arpu reached 40 pesos in Q3 compared to 39 pesos in 3Q07.
"We believe that the fixed line business still offers opportunities despite being mature," Bertone added.
The operator's capex for the first nine months of this year came to 1.16bn pesos, up 41% compared to 818mn pesos a year earlier. The fixed line business accounted for 581mn pesos during this period and mobile telephony the remainder.
