The Dominican Republic's President Leonel Fernández has submitted a constitutional reform draft bill to congress that would declare hydrocarbons E&P of "high public interest."
The current constitution makes no reference to hydrocarbons.
Article 9 of the bill also states "all natural resources situated in Dominican territory, including mining deposits, belong to the state and only can be explored and exploited by privates by virtue of the concessions or contracts granted under conditions determined by law."
The government expects E&P development will help the country reduce its dependence on imported hydrocarbons.
There is no oil production in the country, deputy hydrocarbons exploration director Melaneo Aquino previously told BNamericas.
Companies interested in E&P may approach the hydrocarbons E&P office to inquire about available areas, information and the submission of proposals. Areas available for concession span the Cibao, San Juan, Bani-San Cristobal and San Pedro basins.
The hydrocarbons E&P office falls under the industry and trade ministry's mining department.
