Privatization - Regional - Fifteen delegations to discuss Pacific integration, investment opportunities

A total of 11 delegations from the Latin American Pacific rim are meeting in Chilean capital Santiago with officials from Asian countries and Australia to discuss trade, logistics and integration at the IV Latin American Pacific Arc forum (ARCO), an official from Chile's international economic affairs department Direcon told BNamericas.

Topics to be discussed include investment opportunities in productive sectors, such as mining, agriculture and water, as well as in infrastructure development to cope with increasing trade demand between the two Pacific shores, the official said.

Japan, China, South Korea and Australia are taking part in the forum and the first three countries have expressed special interest in increasing their economic and operational participation in Latin America, said the official.

Ministers from the countries attending the meeting are expected to sign a declaration stating their interest in developing joint initiatives in a number of areas.

FORUM TOPICS

The sustainability of natural resources, expanding basic services, and increasing production and trade to reduce poverty, as well as coordinating works to benefit the entire Latin American region are some of the issues expected to be included in the discussions, the Direcon official said.

Infrastructure initiatives include the development of highways, ports and rail lines, as well as the South American infrastructure integration initiative, IIRSA, the official added.

Representatives from the eleven Latin American delegations met in Panama and Colombia earlier this year to prepare for the meeting.

The ARCO forum will be held in Santiago from October 2-4. Created in 2007, ARCO aims to promote trade and investment relations between member countries, as well as develop closer ties with Asian countries to increase trade.

Countries participating in the event are Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru and Panama - all members of ARCO.
