Privatization - Brazil - ANP eyes SMEs in round 10

SMEs are likely to compete in Brazil's 10th licensing round this year, although larger players could be interested in natural gas potential in northern Amazonas blocks, according to Paulo Souza da Silva, manager of licensing rounds at hydrocarbons regulator ANP.

ANP is primarily offering low-risk mature blocks that will likely attract smaller companies. But some of the larger properties are home to unexplored frontier land that could be tempting to midsize players, he told reporters following a presentation at the INGEPET oil and gas conference in Lima.

And natural gas always is attractive to major companies, da Silva said.

"I'd say these blocks are medium risk because they're onshore," he said in response to a question from BNamericas.

Some companies have been disappointed by the lack of high-prospect offshore blocks in round 10, Francisco Bello, regional director of Teams America at energy consultancy HIS, told the conference.

ANP will offer 130 onshore blocks in the round scheduled for December 18, covering 70,370km2 in seven basins: Sergipe-Alagoas, Amazonas, Paraná, Potiguar, Parecis, Recôncavo and São Francisco.
