Peru's government is preparing a new licensing round for 2009, Daniel Saba, chairman of oil and gas promotion agency Perupetro, said at the opening ceremony of the INGEPET oil and gas conference in Lima.
The blocks, which have yet to be finalized, will include oil and gas potential, he said, without elaborating on bidding details.
The government in coming months will provide more details on the round.
Peru's congress and comptroller will investigate alleged irregularities in five blocks awarded this year to the Petroperú-Discover Petroleum International consortium as well as the other blocks awarded in the round.
But Perupetro still aims to sign some 25 exploration contracts this year, roughly the same number as 2007, according to Saba.
The strategy is to increase exploration levels in the country, which will become a net exporter of hydrocarbons in no more than three years thanks largely to the Camisea gas export project.
Peru was a major hydrocarbons producer in the 1970s before investments dried up, largely due to government programs and policies, Saba said.
