Infrastructure - Chile - MOP to invest US$124mn in southern rural roads

Chile's public works ministry (MOP) will invest 77bn pesos (US$124mn) by 2010 to improve the rural road network in the country's southern regions, a MOP official told BNamericas, elaborating on a ministry release.

The development plan consists of improving some 3,000km of rural roads in regions VIII, IX, X and XIV.

Works contemplate the rehabilitation and improvement of some 600km/y of roads, with an investment of 15bn pesos/y in each region, MOP minister Sergio Bitar said.

The plan will improve connectivity for those living in isolated areas and boost their productive and trade potential, the MOP official said.

The initiative will also create new business and development opportunities, as the roads will increase the productive sector in general and also promote tourism in the area, the official added.

Works will be designed to guarantee the smallest possible environmental impact, as there are a number of highly valuable environmental resources in the targeted areas, the official said.

The initiative was launched on October 16 by President Michelle Bachelet and Bitar.

"The plan aims to contribute to the socio-economic development and social integration of the country's indigenous people who live in rural areas and also seeks to recognize the nation's multi-cultural character," Bachelet said.

The project will also help combat poverty and create more equality, Bitar said.

Regional and local governments, public services and the community will all be involved in the initiative, as they will be included in roundtable talks to discuss needs and determine priorities, the minister added.
